dHKarchitects operates on a straightforward premise: buildings should work for the people who use them. Embedded in the communities of Victoria and Nanaimo, the firm has a collaborative approach to design, functioning as a network of approachable experts and creative puzzle-solvers.
The practice is defined by its deep understanding of Vancouver Island—navigating regional logistics, complex municipal codes, and distinct topography to deliver solutions that are both ambitious and buildable. Our clients work directly with project architects, ensuring a process characterized by clarity rather than complexity. This is architecture without ego—driven by a commitment to the urban fabric and a genuine respect for the budget, the vision, and the diverse needs of the community.

Architecture is an act of stewardship—shaping place with intention, listening before acting, and creating spaces that genuinely support daily life. This belief forms the backbone of our practice. We look to the site, the climate, and the community, letting context guide how to best realize a project’s goals.

Integrity, transparency, responsiveness, and agility shape how we work. We keep our solutions practical, economical, and long-lasting. We maintain a close connection across our studios, and stay engaged with our local communities to ensure ideas are informed by the realities of construction.

At the core is expertise without pretense: clear communication, a collaborative spirit, and technical depth used to simplify challenges, not complicate them. Everything we build is rooted in the needs of the island and the people who call it home.
The de Hoog & Kierulf studio was founded in 2001 by principals Peter de Hoog and Charles Kierulf. Originally based at Mattick’s Market in Cordova Bay, the office moved to downtown Victoria in 2008. From the beginning, they shared a vision of creating architecture deeply connected to Vancouver Island’s unique character and communities. Through diverse residential and commercial projects, the studio establishes itself as a trusted practice known for thoughtful design and reliable service, steadily attracting talented architects and designers who share the founders’ commitment to quality work.
Glenn Hill joins as principal and leads the opening of our Nanaimo office in 2014. This expansion strengthens our understanding of regional building practices, regulatory frameworks, and the distinct character of Island communities beyond Victoria. Rob Whetter and Glenn Hill become partners in 2021 (?), bringing expertise in large-scale projects, master planning, and housing. The leadership team now balances the founders’ established vision with fresh perspectives on contemporary practice and emerging building challenges.
Our team has grown to 20+ architects, interior designers, technologists, and project managers working across both offices. We’ve deepened our expertise in sustainable design, adaptive reuse, and complex institutional projects while maintaining the collaborative studio culture established by our founders. With Peter de Hoog transitioning to Partner Emeritus, dHK continues to evolve while staying rooted in the principles that have guided us for over 25 years—committed to thoughtful architecture that serves our clients and strengthens the communities we call home.
