corfield

243 Corfield is a 2-storey multi family residential building composed of two ground floor suites and three split level suites. To provide individuality within this multi-unit configuration, each residence has their own garage and personal entrance. Located next to a future significant 6-storey seniors residence, the building’s architectural design responds to the appropriate scale of the neighbouring multi-unit buildings fanning out from the site. It is anticipated that 243 Corfield will integrate seamlessly into the array of adjoining medium density developments and provide a natural transition between the commercial development at the northern end of Corfield and the single family residential areas further south.

A modern ‘West Coast’ architectural typology has been used with low sloping shed style roofs that engage with the directionality of the street edge. The form and character of the building is designed to give emphasis to the Corfield frontage by locating semi public aspects of the residential units, such as entries, kitchens, living rooms and balconies along the street edge to animate the building and provide gentle visual engagement. To ensure a high quality of site, each of the units has been oriented to obtain its own sense of privacy, while also engaging with the surrounding yard and street edge. The material palette is composed of hues of white, charcoal grey and cedar siding in natural colours that have been employed along Corfield and complement the existing character and heritage of the area. To avoid large expanses of any one material, the elevations have been developed through a language of motion. In this manner, the roof planes and walls at times step back and at others reach out into the site providing opportunities for a mixture of material finishes and architectural design. These recesses provide niches for main entries and upper level balconies - rendering dynamic building faces. Three different materials will be applied to each elevation: the wood grain lapped siding lends a splash of warmth to the arctic white and charcoal panel clad elevations.
