Set within a mature landscaped property in Saanich, the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens reimagines the traditional funeral home as a warm, contemporary environment for gathering, remembrance, and celebration. The architecture is rooted in a distinctly West Coast sensibility, using openness, natural light, and strong connections to the surrounding gardens to create spaces that feel calm, welcoming, and deeply connected to their setting.
Rather than organizing the building around a single ceremonial experience, the design incorporates flexible spaces capable of accommodating gatherings of varying scale and character. Intimate memorials, larger celebrations of life, traditional funeral services, receptions, and multimedia presentations can all be supported within a cohesive architectural environment.
Generous glazing and carefully positioned openings bring daylight into the interior while extending views toward landscaped patios and gardens. These outdoor spaces become an integral part of the experience, allowing gatherings to move naturally between inside and outside and introducing moments of reflection within the surrounding landscape.
